Blind Vistas

Exhibition from September 7th to November 16th 2013

"Let us learn to depart from the field of vision that we usually impose upon the world with an unconscious authority. Let us learn to push back the omnipotence of the gaze on everything; and to accept the necessary blinding in order to appreciate invisible places. Through an eternal voyage and a sensory and sensitive experience, Gayle Chong Kwan invites us to do this through her works in Blind Vistas, with the moon - sister planet of the earth, enigmatic star, its legendary fantastic imaginings, its marble and battered solitude in the star spattered sky - that constitute the exhibition leitmotiv" (...).

MICHELANGELO PENSO
Hommage à Gaston de Pawlowski

Exhibition from January 12th to February 23rd 2013

Texte de David Rosenberg

Working in a space between art and science, Penso’s pieces are conceived to be understood both in the macro aesthetic and in the micro aesthetic domain. His sculptures and installation are clearly and objectively perceived, but they also recall the other senses, indeed, creating different connections and images in our brain. All his consideration is about memory: the memory of a past life in a distant place (as for the drawn moleskins series) or the memory of a genetic and biological form (as for his latest works), to be continuously changed and modify.
For this exhibition, Michelangelo Penso chose to pay tribute to the French writer Gaston de Pawlowski, who inspired Marcel Duchamp in his artwork "The Large Glass", referring to Chapter XXXIII of his novel Journey to the land of the Fourth dimension (1912), in which he speaks about giant bacterium.
As the metaphor of the human condition and its fragility, a giant sculpture (Physarum polycephalum, 2013) completely invade, in a disturbing way, the gallery space from the first to the second floor, opened and inaugurated on this occasion.

ESTHER STOCKER
Form Follows Vision

Exhibition from October 25th to December 8th 2012

Alberta Pane gallery is proud to present the second solo show of the Italo-Austrian artist Esther Stocker.
For her first exhibition at the gallery, she completely occupied the space with a big installation of black tape, appearing as a three-dimensional projection of her paintings. This " geometrical railing ", interrupted by cuts, broke the rhythm and the geometrical order of the gallery, and generated a new perception of the space. The gallery itself became a work among the works.
For this second solo show, the artist presents a series of works that have never been exhibited before : the models of her museum installations and her big format works realised in situ. These preliminary works in the realization of the projects in the urban space as well as in museums show us how from a shape, from a set of volumes, a variation of tone, color, rhythm, we manage to activate a process of changing perception and vision: Form Follows Vision.
As she describes it concerning the permanent installation recently realized in Metz for the Mazelle parking in front of the Pompidou Center: " The presence of a shape, a sign can be also important and powerful as the absence of shape. The weft demonstrates that a structure is always something else than the sum of the parts. The 'imaginary' character of the motive has to awake the curiosity of the beholder".

FRITZ PANZER
Doubles
Exhibition from September 8th to October 20th 2012

Alberta Pane Gallery is pleased to welcome Fritz Panzer for his first solo exhibition in France. The Austrian artist is above all known for his wire sculptures of every day objects in 1:1 scale.
All throughout his career, Fritz Panzer has followed the same approach in his works with different media. He presents a series of wire sculptures, including the "Pianino" (2010),as well as several drawings and paintings. In the words of Sarah Heigl  ("The Walk In Drawing"): "We have two objects in front of us,  which do not complete nor exclude each other, who are no more or not yet the Other (Roland Barthes). (...)
By the extension of the drawing into three dimensions, the creation of the'walk-in drawing', our impression is reinforced to be dealing with objects dwelling an intermediate world."

IVAN MOUDOV
The Glory Hole
Exhibition from May 5th to June 16th 2012

For his second exhibition at Alberta Pane Gallery, Ivan Moudov presents a project
in two parts, The Glory Hole—a title inspired by gay culture in the 1970s.
The gallery will be split in two by a wall made specifically for the exhibition, interrupted at its centre by an empty circle of 8 cm.
On one side, Moudov presents a minimalist show of only a few pieces; on the other, the viewer will find a space occupied by many works of all different techniques—video, photography, object and installation—this side functioning as a sort of mini-retrospective to his work made between 2009 and 2012. The wall, a central piece to the exhibition, finds itself at the border between two radically different concepts of the exhibition.
When standing in the center of the gallery at the circle, the viewer is able to see the exhibition, playing the part of the voyeur who sees without being seen.

The Argentinian artist questions the relations between bodies, architectures and materials in urban, domestic and institutional spaces. She destroys social ceremonies, paying attention to the smallest of our self preservation instincts. Through subversive thoughts and illicit actions, furniture´s disassembly and sabotages filmed by a hand−held camera, her work − videos, sounds, installations, photographs and actions − put the public in the heart of her chaotic practice and her borderline position.

On the occasion of Crache! −her first solo show in France− Luciana Lamothe presents a site specific installation that will fill up all the Alberta Pane Gallery.

Coming back from South Korea, Marie Lelouche sweeps Alberta Pane Gallery with a double exhibition, inspired from her stay in the Land of the Morning Calm, (Goyang Art Studio 2010 and Nanji art studio 2011). This young French artist, born in 1984 and graduated in 2008 from Ensba (Paris), is specialized in the sophisticated arts of blown glass and porcelain, which she combined to raw materials, such as fabric or wood, by questioning the material limits to derive unequaled shapes.

Alberta Pane Gallery is pleased to present the first personal exhibition of French artist Florence Girardeau, born in 1980 and graduated from ENSBA in 2005. The title Tout se fige alors (So everyhing freezes) which is inspired by a phrase from Beckett´s short story "The lost ones"(1970), seems to evoke a possible danger. Borrowing forms and dynamics from geological science, the pieces collected by the artist − objects, photographs, a video installation and a whole new series of drawings − keep their balance on the limits of stability.

Following his widely noticed participation in the Salon de Montrouge and the Salon du Dessin Contemporain 2011 in Paris, João Vilhena, a Portuguese artist currently living in Paris, exhibits in Alberta Pane Gallery from October 20th to November 19th. He presents an entirely new series of large format drawings, accompanying an in situ wall painting.

João Vilhena´s work is, and has always been, led by the interest he takes in the role of the beholder. For the artist a work enters into existence via the audience´s scrutiny, through the act of observation itself, which brings it to life and gives it meaning. His practice naturally oriented itself towards drawing, a particular style of drawing which he executes with unsettling precision. A virtuoso of the pencil and the word, João Vilhena feints, hides, substitutes end disguises without ever unveiling what lies beyond. To this end he uses different techniques such as optical illusions, trompe l´oeil or anamorphoses, and in the works´ titles spoonerisms, anagrams and other word games.

Alberta Pane Gallery is pleased to present the first solo show in France of the internationally renowned artist Esther Stocker, who will occupy the entire gallery space from September, 10th to October, 15th, 2011. Esther Stocker´s work principally consists of paintings and installations in an abstract and geometrical perspective, the two genres being closely related to each other. The artist´s installations are three dimensional projections of her paintings, exclusively realised with a limited palette of black, grey and white. Could they be described as spatial, sculptural paintings or rather as pictorial spaces? Esther Stocker breaks the genres of art. Occupying the floor, the walls and the ceiling, she creates her own structural space inside of Alberta Pane Gallery.

Giphantie
Exhibition from June 10th to July 23th 2011

Example content image: left-align

Galerie Alberta Pane presents a new solo exhibition of Gayle Chong Kwan including two recent photographic series "Senscape Scotland" and " Designated Status (ongoing) " which play with ideas of memory, fictional landscapes and the historiography of photography.

Giphantie was an imaginative tale by Tiphaigne de la Roche published in 1760, that anticipated the development of photography long before its invention. Escaping death in a hurricane, the novel´s hero, finds himself on the enchanted fertile island of Giphantia (Giphantie being an anagram of the author´s name).

Les yeux derrière la tête
Exhibition from April 2nd to May 28th 2011

For her second solo show at the Alberta Pane Gallery, Marie Denis presents a new series of works that aim to uninhibit notions of beauty and decorative. The exhibition "Eyes in the back of the head" invites the visitors to widen their field of view, and multiply their senses when contacting sculptures ranging from the very large to the very small. Marie Denis wants above all to produce endorphin and to create pleasure with the perception of her works. The exhibition´s principle direction follows the ideas of customization and reemployment, which are manners of reinjecting research into forms already created. Deconstruct, reconstruct. From the Cambodian plastic bag to the peacock´s feather, the artist transforms her sculptures and objects by revisiting the materials that constitute them.

NON

Une proposition de Daniele Capra
Exhibition from January 8th to February 19th 2011

Example content image: right-align

NON challenges the mainstream by exposing the weaknesses and limits hidden behind its facade.
NON seeks to bypass artistic conventions through anarchic thought and criticism, which refuses to adhere to the rules of bureaucratic conformity; harmful not only to art enthusiasts but to society as a whole.
NON challenges space − each artist will create a performance specifically related to the gallery and the viewer, looking for interaction and proposing alternatives to standardized lines of thought. Deconstructing the usual chain reaction of actions and facts, and judging and analysing it in a playful and ironic way, Cvijanovic and Moudov underline the ambiguity of the real, and the inadequacy of our instruments of interpretation....

Exhibition from October 30th to December 20th 2010

Example content image: right-align

Alberta Pane Gallery presents “Blow-Up,” a group exhibition that brings together international artists Eleonora Aguiari, Igor Eškinja, and João Vilhena around the common theme of perceptive illusion. The title of the exhibition is a reference to the film by Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni that relates the loss of marks of a photographer confronted by confusion between reality and illusion. Here, the presented works – photographs, installations, and drawings – invite the observer to stimulate their powers of perception while playing with the boundaries of the visible and the invisible.

Blue Genetic
Exhibition from September 4th to October 23th 2010

Example content image: left-align

Michelangelo Penso comes to Alberta Pane´s Gallery for the third time with his personal exhibition Blue Genetic a retrospective of his pieces from 2008 to 2010. Inspired by distant cosmic dimensions (White Island, 2007), the artist´s work reaches the depth of organic masses and genetic circuits presented in this exhibition in the form of sculptures, installations, and drawings. Penso, a true poet of artistic materials, recently became interested in a new raw material offering many creative possibilities: polyester straps. In the series Orbits, different-colored straps are rolled and assembled in various cosmic formations, presented on the wall or on the floor.

Stratifications

Group exhibition, curated by Daniele Capra.
Giancarlo Dell´Antonia, Igor Eskinja, Florence Girardeau,
Bruno Kladar and Marie Lelouche

Exhibition from June 5th to July 25th 2010

Example content image: right-align

[What]
This exposition was born from a reflection on the concept of stratification. We hope to bring together the work of five differing international artists who all think and operate by superposition, both in the visual and conceptual sphere. We are invited by the plurality of their work to take a look at the elements of analogy and diversity.

[Why]
The world is a sandwich. Life is characterized by juxtapositions on various levels of moments, visions, desires, frustrations, places, and people. On our computer screen windows are open simultaneously; our work constructs itself by stratification. Versatile, we are used to performing several tasks at once and carrying out different lines of thought without implicating their combination or their exclusion. Managing this complexity is the daily bread of the postmodern man. Stratification is fueled by accumulation and sedimentation, quite like how our hard drives are loaded with data. The depositing of images and objects, be it perpetual and inexorable, allows us at regular intervals to confront an inadvertently forgotten past or a future that is yet to be defined. Stratification seems to show its double-sidedness, posed between the instantaneous flow of fate and the accumulation of a world we cannot ignore.

The Future is Near. The Future is Now!
Exhibition from January 9th to March 4th 2010

Example content image: right-align

The exhibition The Future is Near. The Future is Now! is made up of 8 works/installations inspired by perceptions of the future in relation to climatic changes and Man´s interventions in nature.
Using different means, such as video, sound, photography and sculpture the exhibition intends to investigate the sense of precariousness and insecurity which pervades the collective perception of our near future. Alternating visions of differing realities: visions of a post−human epoch in which nature reclaims the metropolis, are placed alongside cities devastated by cataclysms: the precariousness of food resources alongside the advance of pandemics. Each work describes a subtle balance between folly and self−destruction, inviting deep reflection on the destiny of our species: every image demands an examination of the very concept of humanity and its future.

Gayle Chong Kwan
The Grand Tour

Example content image: right-align

Meat, ham, chocolate nourish us but they could be also the fundamental subjects to explain a mythical view of our Era. The personal and global politics of food and tourism have been a major focus of Gayle Chong Kwan´s works. She is a Scottish−Chinese Mauritian artist based in London. Her work is often specific to a context and explores histories, memory and the senses. The artist´s practice features elements of photography, video, installation and performance. Kwan´s pieces take the viewer on a journey across countries and civilizations, exploring the relationship between food, culture, and what it means to take from the earth. She has created many mythical landscape from distributing arrangements foods, like one of the most her famous photos the Tower of Babel made from sweating meat. Food enters the landscape as Chong Kwan´s metaphor for mastery, a kind of satire on those consumers of art, food, language and culture who imagined that they had digested entire worlds. She also working with plastic material as in the "Atlantis series", is an enormous mythical landscape, a city created and carved out of semi−opaque, used, plastic food packaging, collected from people who live in London. It is referred to a lost city but it´s also a critical observation of waste and climate change in our present life. Gayle Chong Kwan is now one of the most representative young artist in UK, she has the Arts Council England individual artist´s award, grant by Arts Council England, and she has set up many solo and group exhibitions, that confirmed her talent.
